Learning Journey with our Founder

Ever wondered what it takes to create, build and sustain a social enterprise?
The Social Space was imagined, created and brought to life by husband-and-wife duo, Cheryl Ou and Daniel Yeow. They truly believe that it is possible to build a business that was profitable, scalable and genuinely made a difference to people and planet. The couple want to use their position as business owners and employers to provide training and employment to those who need it the most.
Join them on a learning journey to go behind the scenes to understand how our social enterprise practices inclusive employment and empowers persons from marginalized backgrounds, and aims to inspire our community to become social impact champions so as to create an economy for good.
At this session, participants will be able to experience:
1) Introduction of The Social Space's mission by one of our co-founders to learn how our social enterprise was started, and hear about their efforts to promote social inclusion and environmental sustainability, as well as their personal stories, struggles and motivations in building a business for good.

2) Enjoy a hearty lunch prepared by our inclusive team
(Choice of 1x Double Open-Face Toast OR Smoothie Bowl, and 1x Drink per person)
3) Hear from a member of our team, and learn how The Social Space has impacted her life.
4) Q&A: Our founder will answer any burning questions you may have about their experience in starting and running a social enterprise. (Duration: 30 minutes)

About our Founders:

Cheryl is a serial entrepreneur who started her first business at 22 and won her first entrepreneurship award at 25. The founder of The Nail Social and The Social Space, both social enterprises, has come a long way from her early days in the start-up scene. From crab shacks and nail salons to backpacker hostels, Cheryl had dipped her feet into businesses across many industries when a bad experience with an investor led her to rethink her own motivations for running a business. Cheryl has now dedicated herself to creating meaningful companies that inspire and drive social change in our community. The Nail Social was a commendation winner at the President’s Challenge Social Enterprise Awards in 2015, and Cheryl herself was named Cosmopolitan’s ‘Fun, Fearless Female’ of 2015 and was a honouree for Singapore Tatler’s Gen T List in 2019.

Daniel’s formative years were spent growing up greatly inspired by his mother’s role in women’s rehabilitation as a volunteer counselor with Changi Women’s Prison and Director of Turning Point women’s halfway house. Being married to a two-time social entrepreneur, Daniel has also been inspired to be a part of the social enterprise industry. Daniel’s stint as General Manager of Singapore Airlines in Bali further opened his eyes to the rich-poor disparity that exists, and he has leveraged on his commercial experience and innate ability to connect with people from diverse backgrounds to build a commercially viable and sustainable social enterprise. Daniel's recent diagnosis of adult ADHD coupled with his close working relationship with various staff, caregivers and medical practitioners has also further motivated him to speak up on issues related to mental health. His efforts were recently recognized when he won the Spirit of Enterprise Award in 2022.

Our team was inspired by the clarity of purpose of The Social Space. We enjoyed the candid sharing (highs and lows) about starting and running a sustainable business. It was clear to us that the mission of giving folks another chance of being independent and successful in their roles not only benefited the beneficiaries, but also others in the workplace. It brings empathy to a new level and in the process, a more gracious workforce.

Thank you for sharing the vision and wisdom gained while running social enterprises. Keep motivating young people to go the way you have gone!

The delegation for the China-Singapore Youth Leader Campus 2024 engaged in an insightful discussion on supporting the vulnerable groups, and learnt greatly from Daniel’s sharing and story at The Social Space.

The delegation feedbacked that they enjoyed the intimate sharing and cozy set up and the learning journey at The Social Space was one of the most well-received segments of the programme.
