Introducing Singapore Hok San Association
Founded in 1920, Hok San is Singapore’s first lion-dance troupe and remains the oldest in the city. With its roots in Heshan (Guangdong), China, the Hok San style is known for refined, acrobatic, lion movements and distinctive drumming that echoes through generations.
Their mission: to preserve and pass on traditional lion dance, drumming and martial art techniques - connecting heritage with today’s community.
What Participants Can Expect:
1) Shophouse tour: Begin with a guided walk through Hok San’s heritage shophouse, exploring its lion-dance hall, historic murals and training spaces.
2) Spoken introduction: Learn from a master practitioner about the origins of the Hok San style of lion dance, its unique cat-like movements, drumming tradition and cultural significance.
3) Hands-on session: Get your turn to don lion-dance equipment: feel the weight of the lion head, try the drum sticks, step into the lion’s body and experience the rhythm for yourself. Suitable for kids and adults.
4) Q&A & photo moment: Ask questions, take photos in the lion costume, and walk away with a new appreciation of this living tradition.
This is your chance to step behind the scenes of one of Singapore’s cultural pillars. Discover the lion’s roar, feel the drum beat, and join the tradition that’s more than 100 years strong.
