Tan Yin Shan (Intern, 2024)

If you're currently hunting for an internship or waiting for the interview, don't worry—it's not as scary as it seems.

I vividly recall my first time walking into The Social Space for my interview and being pretty nervous, despite having prior work experience. The thought of stepping outside of my comfort zone to challenge myself by trying something new and unfamiliar was unsettling. Yet now, as my internship wraps up, I realise how taking a leap of faith and diving into a new environment can be so rewarding - even if it feels a bit intimidating at first. 😄
As a university undergrad, I needed to complete a communications placement program as part of my studies. At the same time, I've always been fascinated by the world of cafés and wanted to experience working in one! So, I jumped at the opportunity to combine my communications internship with a stint in the café. 🍵
The Social Space's hybrid café and retail setup allow me to experience it all, from working on the café or retail floor to updating the website with recent happenings. It truly was the perfect opportunity to broaden my skill set and experience.

Working at TSS is a dynamic experience that requires wearing multiple hats and juggling multiple tasks at once. As a smaller, tight-knit business, every team member plays a vital role in keeping things running smoothly. But what's even more rewarding is that my voice is heard, and my ideas matter even as an intern! I've had the opportunity to contribute during brainstorming sessions, share my thoughts, and leave a mark on the business no matter how small it may be. 🏪
It extends to gaining valuable insights into the significance of empathy and care in a social enterprise business. I've also learned how to identify opportunities and take advantage of them, even in unexpected ways. This has taught me to approach challenges with a solutions-focused mindset and to always be on the lookout for ways to improve and grow. 💪

My time at The Social Space has helped me grow professionally and, more importantly, as a person. As a super introvert, interacting with everyone at TSS wasn't always easy, but it opened up my eyes to different perspectives and allowed me to think about the kind of person I would want to become. I found a community here that embraces everyone's differences without judgment, and people who are always willing to lend a helping hand when you need it.
As I bid farewell, I looked back on my internship with heartfelt appreciation and warmth. The time I spent at TSS was short but sweet, and I will always cherish the experience and the connections I made. ♥

Thinking about stepping out of your comfort zone can be daunting, but if you never try, you'll never know what you're capable of. So, take the leap—it's worth it.
